For example, if a person with a "Student" or "Dependent" status changes their status of residence and starts a new job, it will be considered "illegal employment" unless they change their status to one that allows them to work. Also, even if you have a work-eligible status, if you work in a job that is not appropriate for that status, it is considered as "Engaging in activities other than permitted under the status of residence"

Q. When can I renew my status of residence?: Normally, it is possible to apply for renewal three months in advance. However, there are cases where this differs depending on status of residence, such as permanent residency, which can be done two months in advance.

Q. I want to change my status of residence to Specially Designated Activities while waiting for my job to start. How much of a balance should I have left showing in my bankbook?: The exact amount is not set, but it must be an amount that is deemed to be sufficient to cover your living expenses until you start working at the company.

Q. My current status of residence is "Student" and I am working part-time with permission to engage in other activities. Is it possible to continue working part-time after graduation until I find employment?: Your permission to engage in other activities will no longer be valid once your current residence card is no longer valid. Therefore, please refrain from working part-time after graduation as your current permission to engage in other activities will be invalid. If you have changed your status of residence to "Specially Designated Activities" while waiting for your job to start, you can once again obtain permission to engage in other activities.

Q. For a renewal (change), do I have to physically go to the Immigration Bureau?: No, since we will be handling the application, you do not have to go to the Immigration Bureau.

Q. How long is the renewal (change) process?: It depends on the status of residence, but permissions are usually given within 1 to 3 months.

Q. Can I renew my passport while applying for a renewal (change)?: Yes, that's not a problem.

Q. My period of stay will expire during the status of residence renewal (change) application process. Will I be staying illegally?: If you apply before your period of stay expires, you will be given a two month grace period. You will be able to stay legally until you receive the results of the screening process.

Q. Can I move while applying for a renewal (change) of status of residence?: Yes, that's not a problem. Report your move within two weeks of moving and bring your residence card with your new address written on it when picking up your new visa. If you move far away (from Tokyo to Osaka, etc.), you can pick up your new visa at the Immigration Bureau in your new jurisdiction if you apply to do so.

Q. How do I apply for a renewal (change) for a Highly Skilled Professional visa?: Highly Skilled Profressional visas work on a point system. You can check your points from the Immigration Bureau website below. If you have 70 or more points, you can apply.

Q. I have to hand in my residence card and passport when I apply. What should I do if the police or someone else asks to see them?: Explain to the police that they have been submitted due to your application.

Q. Can I leave the country while applying for a renewal (change) of status of residence?: If you obtain special re-entry permission, it is not a problem. However, you must schedule a pick-up time and location in order to make sure you receive your Notice of Allowance.

Q. If I leave the country with special re-entry permission, can I extend my period of stay?: Unfortunately, you are not able to extend your period of stay by obtaining special re-entry permission. Because of this, please make sure to return to Japan before your period of stay expires. Be aware that if your period of stay expires while you are outside the country, you will need to apply again.

Q. My period of stay will expire while I am outside the country with re-entry permission. Is it possible to renew (change) my status of residence while outside Japan?: Living in Japan is a prerequisite for having a status of residence, so it is not possible to renew your status of residence from outside Japan. You must return to Japan to renew (change) your status of residence.

Q. My status of residence is Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services. Can I change jobs?: You are allowed to change jobs with the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status of residence as long as the work falls under the category of your status of residence. However, it is necessary to submit a "Notification Concerning Contracting Organization." Additionally, if you obtain a "Certificate of Authorized Employment" from the Immigration Bureau, the screening for your next status of residence renewal will go more smoothly.

Q. I lost my passport (residence card).: Please have it reissued immediately. You can apply to have your passport reissued at your country's embassy in Japan and your residence card reissued at the Immigration Bureau. For either, you need to report the loss at your local police station (not a police box), so please do that first. After that, follow the application procedure at the embassy or Immigration Bureau.

Q. If my permission is denied, am I allowed to reapply?: Yes, you can. Permission is usually not suddenly denied. Denied permission usually results from failure to provide additional materials. However, proof that can overturn the reason for the denied permission is necessary.
